Weary of Souderton's impressive strength in the field, the Bucks
performed brilliantly on the track in their second win on Thursday. While Souderton won six of the seven field events, West won ten of the eleven track events on the blustery Spring day. Javelin was the hot event of the day, featuring the only district-qualifying performances of the competition amidst the strong winds. Souderton's Eric Conard rocketed a 171 foot throw to complement his 15.3 second win in the 110 meter high hurdles and third place in the 300 meter intermediate hurdles. West senior Burgess Bryant countered with a 166 foot javelin throw to surpass the district-qualifying standard of 160 feet and place second. Junior Will Fernandez also impressed, pulling a 156 foot throw of his own to place third. Fellow thrower and junior John Williams launched his flying saucer for a whopping PR of 123 feet in the discus throw to place second. Junior strongman Cory Radkins put the shot 39' 10.5" to narrowly surpass Fernandez's fantastic heave of 39'6", placing second and third respectively. Mikey DeMarco had another terrific day, as he cleared 12 feet in the pole vault to take second on misses to fellow senior teammate Corey Smith. Smith had a big day, also placing second in the high jump and third in the triple jump. On the track, the Bucks ran wild. Juniors Shawn Young and Jimmie Kilgannon went 1-2 in the 300 intermediate hurdles. Seniors Eric Zoleski and Ben Smith teamed up in the 4x800 meter relay with junior Austin Kline for the first time since placing 5th at the Indoor State Championship Meet in the 4x800 meter relay. Senior Rob Mitchell coupled with the threesome to outpace the Indians by just a few seconds with a time of 8:27.8. Junior Greg Branch and sophomore Jamie Valdez ran a wind-aided 11.3 and 11.5 respectively to go 1-2 in the 100 meter dash, followed by another Nico Metzler-Chris Berry-Alex Predhome sweep of the mile run. Kline doubled back to win the 400 meter dash in an impressive 51.4, followed by fellow junior Ethan Long's 2nd place 53.2. Zoleski, Branch, and Valdez then teamed up with Eric Grzsnekowski to win the 4x100 meter relay in a season-best 45.6 seconds. Young and Kilgannon doubled back to wind-aided second and third place performances of 16.2 and 16.5, respectively in the 110 meter high hurdles. Metzler, Smith, and junior AJ Morgan each doubled back from previous events to sweep the 800 meter run, followed by Branch and Long placing 1-2 in the 200 meter dash. Berry and Predhome pulled away from the field to go 1-2 in the 3200 meter run, followed by a pair of 4x400s breaking 3:40, highlighted by Nico Metzler's 52.7 leadoff triple. The Bucks return to action on Tuesday at CB West to kick off the Easter Break in style against Quakertown. The Bucks rallied a creshendo of impressive performances against the talented and tough Titans at CB South to begin the spring track and field season with a bang.
Junior Shawn Young earned a hard-fought 2nd place against one of Pennsylvania's finest athletes to blaze a huge PR of 41.0 in the intermediate hurdles. West was then outpaced in the 4x800 run and 100 meter dash. Down 18-5 on the track, Nico Metzler, Alex Predhome, and Chris Berry went 1-2-3 in the mile, earning nine points back. In the following event, Austin Kline ran a district-qualifying 50.9 in the 400 meters. Fellow Junior Ethan Long outleaned his competitor to add another vital three points to the Bucks' score. The Titans rallied back to win the 4x100 relay, but Young charged with fellow Junior Jimmie Kilgannon in the 110 meter high hurdles to place first and third. One of the most impressive performances of the day came in the 800 meter run. West Seniors Nico Metzler and Ben Smith doubled back from the mile and 4x800 respectively to defeat state medalist Ryan Dickson of CB South, earning a huge eight points toward the Bucks' effort. Junior Greg Branch followed with a district-qualifying 2nd place performance of 22.5 in the 20 meter dash. Berry and Predhome teamed up again to pile on another eight points to the Bucks score in the two mile run with their 1-2 punch. The Titans had the last word on the track, winning the 4x400, despite impressive triples by Long (52.1), Smith (51.6), and Kline (51.3). The Bucks left the track nervously ahead by a scant seven points, 40-47. Junior Will Fernandez and Senior Burgess Bryant came through for West in the throws, launching a pair of 160 foot gems lead a sweep in the javelin throw! Seniors Corey Smith and Mikey DeMarco then followed suit, remaining rock-solid in the very challenging windy weather to place 1-2 in the pole vault. DeMarco then came up big by winning the last event of the day, the triple jump, with a monster PR of 39'4" in the finals, sealing the 76-74 victory in the Bucks first dual meet. Congratulations to all athletes on a team performance that will not soon be forgotten. The Bucks return to action at home against Souderton on Thursday at 3:30 pm. |
