Senior Chris Berry did a remix of his junior year postseason campaign just a bit better in 2013. Berry shaved a full second off of his previous 3200 meter run school record of 9:23.46 with a 9:22.52. His time was good enough for a 5th place medal and automatically clinched a spot in the State Championship Final at Shippensburg on Saturday. Greg Branch, Shawn Young, Ethan Long, and Austin Kline are also making the most of their senior year. The foursome shattered the previous school record not once but twice this weekend in the mile relay, the meeting ground of the best athletes in our sport. The previous record held by Mike May, Matt McGarvey, Matt Bee, and Connor Manley of 3:19.97 was upended by four tenths of a second per man by Branch (49.0), Young (49.0), Long (50.5), and Kline (49.7) in the District One Championship trials with a 3:18.34. The senior squad returned to do it again with a 3:18.81 effort (50.4-49.5-50.6-48.2) in the finals to clinch 6th place in District One. Amazingly, the top eight seeds in the State Championship this weekend all came from District One. 13 of the top 14 times in Pennsylvania were run by District One schools prior to the district meet. Young also placed 6th in the hurdles, and advanced to the State Championship Meet on time (39.50) but unselfishly elected to scratch to go all-in on the mile relay. The Bucks' 4x400 was given a nod as one of seven schools with a legitimate shot, as all seven schools are within 2 seconds of each other. Three Bucks senior throwers had their final outing of a remarkable season at Districts. John Williams placed 14th in the discus, while Will Fernandez and Jackson Butkus placed 11th and 12th overall. West throwers scored an unheard of 355 points for the Bucks this season, nearly enough for five dual meet wins (75 points or more wins)! The 4x100 and 4x800 meter relays also had oustanding performances on Friday. Sophomore Josh Haschets stepped up in the leadoff spot, teaming up with sophomore Josh Bazzano, freshman Ryan Walsh, and sophomore Andrew Baker to hit a 45.32 with flawless handoffs. Senior AJ Morgan (2:02), freshman Rock Fortna (2:02), senior Jimmie Kilgannon (2:06), and freshman Carter Zerweck (2:08) also had a strong showing, all on the brink of their season bests to earn an 8:23.19. The Bucks' mile relay and Chris Berry return to action on Friday and Saturday at the State Championship Meet in Shippensburg! West had a banner day on Saturday at the finals of the SOL Continental Championships at CB South. West bookended the day with memorable League Championship performances in the first two events of the day as well as the last and most coveted event of the day, the mile relay. After LaSalle-bound senior Chris Berry defended his League title in the 3200 meter run, future Golden Ram Sean Young stole the 110 high hurdles and bettered his third-fastest-in-program-history 15.31 from Friday with a sizzling 15.09 to win the tall timbers on Saturday morning. Young also finished second in the 300 meter intermediate hurdles in 39.48 seconds, earning a whopping 28 points on the day for West. Greg Branch, Shawn Young, Ethan Long, and Austin Kline capped off the day to improve on their season best of 3:22.18 with a 3:21.23 in the 4x400 meter relay. Their time was less than a quarter second off of the League Championship record of 3:20.99 set by CB South. Seniors Will Fernandez and Jackson Butkus (160'6"PR) launched district-qualifiers in the javelin, earning 2nd and 4th overall. Like a pitcher with his "best stuff", Fernandez lit up the 167-foot range three times and now claims he may not shower until the state meet (prom is a week later, thankfully). Fellow seniors Ian Fortna, John Williams, and Corey Greenberg also went out on top as a group in the discus, claiming 4th, 5th, and 8th place overall. West also had big performances flown in by their pole vaulters. Juniors Riley Owens (12') and Billy Bothwell (11'6") as well as sophomores Jason Douple (13'0") and Josh Bazzano (12') all cleared personal bests. Douple's district-qualifying personal best was doubly-impressive as he sported fresh stitches on his mug from and errant knee to the face (his own) just a few days prior. Coach Sherwood asked us to clarify that they call themselves the FLIGHT-CLUB, not the FIGHT-CLUB. Black-eyes and stitches are strictly coincidental and add only street-credit. The Bucks return to action at the District One Championships on Friday and Saturday at Coatesville. The Bucks have qualifiers in all three relays, both hurdle races, the javelin, discus, pole vault, 400 meter dash, and the 3200 meter run. West's shotputters took advantage of the beautiful weather on the first day of the SOL Continental Conference Championships at Hatboro-Horsham and took three of the eight scoring places, the most of any school. Senior Cory Radkins (46-5.5) placed 3rd, sophomore Adam Anastasiadis (43-11.75) was 7th, and Senior Ian Fortna (42-3) was 8th to earn nine points for the Bucks. The high-hurdles were also a big high-light for the Bucks. A testament to Coach Conboy's expertise, West had an amazing eight hurdlers qualify into the 24-man field from all eight teams in the SOL Continental. After each team was allotted their two automatic qualifiers, the Bucks had six of the next eight fastest hurdlers in the league. Senior Shawn Young's district-qualifying PR of 15.31 seconds won his heat, automaticallly clinching a prefered lane in Saturday's final. His time is also the third fastest time in program history, narrowly edging 2008 graduate Ian Kerr's 15.1 hand-time. Finishing close behind with FAT PRs were junior Big Dan Nowakowski (10th, 16.19) and senior Jimmie Kilgannon (11th, 16.21). Junior DhungHa Kim (12th, 16.32), sophomores DhungJoo Kim and Andrew Baker (tied-15th, 17.60, PRs), senior Dan Valko (19th, 17.84 PR) and sophomore Ryan Devlin (21st, 18.15 PR) followed with terrific efforts. Freshman Brian Iatarola placed 11th in the high jump with a solid 5-6 clearance. In the long jump, DhungHa Kim set a new personal best, narrowly missing the final with his 19-5.5 10th place effort. Seniors Ethan Long and Jimmie Kilgannon also jumped well, hitting 18-6 and 17-11.5 respectively. Despite being hampered by hamstring issues, juniors DhungHa Kim (11.65) and Jamie Valdez (11.78) posted PRs in the 100 meter dash, placing 17th and 18th in a talented field. Freshman Rock Fortna (2:01.9) teamed up with seniors Austin Kline (2:02.3), AJ Morgan (2:04.4), and Chris Berry (2:02.4) to place 6th in the 4x800 with a district-qualifying 8:14.21 and earn 3 points for the Bucks. The Bucks return to action on Saturday at CB South for the final day of the SOL Continental Conference Championships. Central Bucks West had a sensational day at the Neshaminy Invitational on Saturday. Senior AJ Morgan aggressively led the mile run from wire to wire and was able to hold off the field to claim victory in a PR of 4:34.80. Freshman teammate Rock Fortna placed third out of the 25-man field in an outstanding personal best 4:37.87. Cory Radkins won the 26-man field in the shotput, heaving 47 feet, 1.5 inches. Fellow senior Will Fernandez qualified for the District One Championships with a throw of 161-7 in the javelin. Fernandez took second among 19 competitors, while Jackson Butkus took 5th. Senior teammates John Williams and Ian Fortna took fifth and sixth in the discus as well. Senior Chris Berry also turned heads, posting another personal best this week in the 800 meter run. Berry's 2:00.18 placed him 5th overall in a field led by two middle-distance state medalists. Jimmie Kilgannon also posted a PR of 2:06.61. In the 4x800 meter relay, freshmen Carter Zerweck and Joey Recupero joined Fortna in the sub-2:10 club, going 2:06.8 and 2:08.2. Fellow freshman Declan McDonald and Brian Iatarola also posted times of 10:23.29 and 10:48.79 in the 3200m run. McDonald was fifth out of 18 older competitors. With freshman posting such elite distance performances, all signs point to an amazing postseason as well as cross country season for the Bucks. Riley Owens cleared 11 feet, 6 inches with few misses below 12 feet on the beautiful day to claim third overall. Junior DhungHa Kim had a busy and action-packed day. Kim advanced to the final and placed 10th in the 100 meter dash with an FAT personal best of 11.81 seconds. He also placed 6th in the 110 meter high hurdle final with a season-best 16.72 seconds. Kim also set a season-best 19-2.75 in the long jump, good enough for 8th. Senior Ethan Long set his second personal best in three days on Saturday in the 400 meter dash. Long went 51.45 to place 4th out of 24 competitors. Long also returned to post a 51.7 anchor leg in the 7th place 4x400 relay. Super-sophomore Josh Haschets placed 8th in the hottest event of the day, the 200 meter dash. Haschets set a PR of 23.97 to improve his SOL Championship seeding. Ryan Devlin and Andrew Baker also improved on their SOL Championship seed times, posting 43.71 and 43.94 respectively. Baker and Haschets also teamed up with Josh Bazzano and DhungHa Kim to place 7th in the 4x100 meter relay. The foursome posted an impressive 45.49 seconds. The 5-2 Bucks return to action at the Suburban One League Continental Conference League Championships on Friday at Hatboro-Horsham and on Saturday at Central Bucks South. Ian Fortna tacked a whopping 16 points onto his 2013 King of the Points total on Thursday at Pennridge's Helman Invitational, improving his rank to 12th. The Bucks' field has been the story so far this Spring. Bucks throwers went 1-3-4 in discus, 2-3-4 in javelin, and 3-5-10 in the shotput on Thursday. Senior John Williams took the discus and returned to place 3rd in the javelin with a PR of 147 feet. Fellow senior Jackson Butkus took 2nd in javelin. Cory Radkins led the shotputters with his 46' 7.25" heave. West went 4-5-8 in the pole vault with junior Riley Owens (12 feet) and sophomore Josh Bazzano (11 feet, 6 inches) tying their PRs. Senior Jimmie Kilgannon (38 feet, 10 inches) and sophomore Beckett Wilson took 4th and 8th in triple jump, with Wilson setting a season best of 34-7. Freshman Brian Iatarola took 5th in high jump with his 5-6 effort. Juniors Jamie Valdez, DhungHa Kim, and senior Ethan Long took 3rd, 4th, and 5th in the long jump - all clearing or nearing 19 feet. The "field" even did work on the track, posting 2nd place in the prestigious twilight thrower's 4x100 meter relay. Staring in that event were Fortna, Corey Greenberg, Will Fernandez, and Cory Radkins. A startled onlooker noted that she had never seen half of a ton move so quickly. On the track, West took 1st and 2nd in the high hurdles and 4th and 5th in the intermediate hurdles. Big Dan Nowakowski earned himself eight points en-route to his new fully-automatically timed 16.47 110m high hurdle best. Senior Jimmie Kilgannon was on right his heels, with a 16.57 second effort of his own. Andrew Baker and Dan Valko posted FAT bests of 43.95 and 44.28 in the intermediates. In an exciting display of good things to come this Fall, freshman Joey Recupero, Declan McDonald, and Brian Iatarola teamed up in the mile, posting 4:51.36, 4:53.08, and 5:00.48, respectively. Senior Ethan Long and freshman Ryan Walsh teamed up in the open 400 meter dash, both posting FAT bests of 51.59 and 55.09. Long placed fifth in the well-contested event. Junior Jamie Valdez, freshman Carter Zerweck, sophomore DhungJoo Kim, and sophomore Josh Bazzano posted a solid 45.97 to place 3rd in the 4x100 meter relay and earn 6 points. Ryan Devlin, Beckett Wilson, Gillis Wang, and Mitchell Smith also scored 2 points each for their 5th place 4x100 finish. Senior Chris Berry and freshmen Rock Fortna and Ryan McIlhinney all posted FAT bests in the open 800 meter run. Berry took 5th with his 2:01.02, while Fortna was 8th in 2:02.21 and McIlhinney was 12th in 2:12.65. Senior Dan Valko showed it's better late than never with his 24.17 200 meter dash PR, placing 6th. The senior 4x400 outpaced the freshman by a respectable six seconds. Jimmie Kilgannon, AJ Morgan, Chris Berry, and Ethan Long did the honors for the Bucks, placing 4th in 3:35.49. Freshmen Ryan Walsh, Rock Fortna, Carter Zerweck, and Ryan McIlhinney won the first heat in an eye-popping 3:41.41. Their time placed them 6th overall. The Bucks return to action on Saturday at their last invite of the season, the Neshaminy Invitational. |
