- 2016 Outdoor Season
States
May 27-28, 2016
The Bucks concluded the 2016 campaign at Shippensburg University for the state championship meet. Brian Mass, the sole individual qualifier, ran 9:50 in the 3200m under hot and humid conditions. This was far off his 9:21 run the week before at Districts, but was an opportunity to gain valuable experience for next year.
In the 4 x 800 relay, the excitement really began. The Bucks qualified for the finals the day before, running a relaxed 7:58. Sustitiute Ryan Mcllhinney spelled freshman sensation Luke Fehrman, giving him some much needed rest in the brutal heat. In the finals, West led off with senior stalwart Carter Zerweck, who handed off to fellow senior Roc Fortna. Fortna was able to move the Bucks up to second, before handing the baton to Fehrman. Sophomore Jake Claricurzio. By this time, State College was off to a commanding lead, en route to a nation leading time of 7:37. With arch rival Pennridge well behind, the battle for second was on between West and Abington. Despite a searing split of 153.9, the Bucks were edged in a photo finish. Nonetheless, they crossed the line in a season best 7:44 for a third place finish. Congratulations for a great ending to a great season!
A shout out also goes to senior Roc Fortna. Roc, who will be continuing his career at the University of Rhode Island, felt that what was missing from his high school career was a school record. Running a week after states at the John Hay Memorial Distance Festival, Roc ran the open mile in 4:16.45, which converts to a 4:14.96 1600m. Way to go, Roc!

West Falters Against East
April 28, 2015---Plumstead.
The Bucks faltered today against arch-rival Central Bucks East, 80-70. Running at Tohickon Middle School while the homeless East squad awaits the completion of Patriot's Stadium, the Bucks got off to a slow start and couldn't quite close the gap. With a few exceptions, including double winners Rock Fortna and Christian Bobowicz, as well as super-freshman Jake Claricurzio, the Bucks were not as sharp as we've grown accustomed to seeing. The team looks to sharpen with two more meets this week, ahead of next Friday's Suburban League One Championships.
Distance and Hurdle Recap--- by Andrew Baker
In a tough battle, the Bucks were handed their first dual meet loss by CB East. Starting off the meet was Evan Washington (sophomore), who placed third in the 300 hurdles in a time of 41.5. Next was the 4x8, an event in which both teams raced at the Championships of America at Penn Relays. East took the race, but standout legs for the Bucks came from Carter Zerweck (1:59) and Andrew Baker (1:57). In the 1600m race, junior Rock Fortna took care of business, placing 1st in 4:27.2. DhungJoo Kim won the 110 hurdles in a PR of 15.4! In the 800, Fortna came back and won in 1:58.5, and senior Matt Bowen was able to hang tough for 3rd place, finishing in 2:02.1. Junior Brian Iatarola had a great showing in the 3200m race, playing 3rd in 10:00.3 behind two of East's distance studs (Jake Brophy and Connor Sands). West's hurdlers and distance runners put up a fight, and certainly won't let this loss derail their aspirations of winning the league meet!
Jumps Recap---by Joe Manetta
It was a very rough day for the jumpers in the meet against East. In the long jump, the Patriots took all three places. Next in the Triple, Erik Metz came through with a PR of 41’10.5”, to take second. Ben Metz (34’), Rohan McDonald (33’7”), and Tarnin Morris (31’.5”) all jumped PR’s in the triple jump! In the high jump, Brian Iatarola broke his 5’8” jumping streak to jump a PR of 6’, enough to get him second! In the pole vault, Pat Danas vaulted a large PR of 12’ to get him second. In the end, the Bucks’ bests were simply not good enough to triumph over East, but the Bucks will face the Patriots again in the SOL championships where the Bucks hope to achieve greater distances and heights.
Throw Recap--- Erik Metz
The throwers put up a fight against the strongmen of Central Bucks East, outscoring them 17 to 27. In the shot put, seniors Brian Miller and Adam Anastasiatis scored 1st and 2nd respectively. Miller returned to throw 1st in the discus, beating out the East thrower by a mere foot; sophomore standout Corey Cepeda scored third with a toss of 101’ 8”. The Bucks stumbled in the Javelin, with Anastasiatis only scoring second, falling to the district qualifying thrower from East; and a huge PR from another East man. Unfortunately, the the throwers was not enough to shift the overall score to West’s favor, but their fight was critical none the less.

Bucks Cruise Past Hatters, Remain Undefeated in Penultimate Duel Meet of the Season!
April 21,2015---Hatboro
Central Bucks West came out on top of Hatboro-Horsham today, in the second-to-last dual meet of the season. At 6-0, only their oldest rival, Central Bucks East, stands between them and a perfect SOL regular season. The Bucks face the Patriots next Tuesday at Tohickon Middle School. Another rivalry, this one sibling, was concluded in Hatboro today, as Bucks distance coach John Mahoney squared off against younger brother Michael. Congratulations to our Coach Mahoney for putting a great game plan into action!

Distance and Hurdle Recap-- by Andrew Baker
The Bucks' distance runners and hurdlers took care of business against Hatboro-Horsham this week. The hurdlers swept both events on Tuesday, albeit they experienced some ugly races, particularly in the 300 hurdles (don't worry, they were able to laugh it off due to the victory). DhungJoo Kim (senior) placed 1st in a 44.31, Evan Washington (sophomore) placed 2nd in 44.63 and was ecstatic to defeat senior Andrew Baker, who was 3rd in 45.13...ouch. In the 110 hurdles, Kim had one of the few PRs set that day, with a victorious time of 15.89. Noah Griffin (sophomore) placed 2nd with a time of 16.94, and Baker -- in his season debut in the 110s -- managed a 3rd place time of 17.43. The 4x800 relay of Joey Recupero (junior), Beckett Wilson (senior), Teagan Fortna (sophomore), and Ryan McIlhinney (junior) won an uncontested race. The 1600-meter race was led by Casey Comber of HH, but sophomore Ben Smullen came nipping at his heels to take second in a time of 4:46.72, just a second behind Comber. He almost beat one of the best milers in the state...maybe next time, Ben. The 800-meter race was arguably the most exciting race of the day, with junior Carter Zerweck and senior Matt Bowen battling for a spot on the Penn Relays 4x8. Matt's majestic flow undeniably got in his way, and he was ultimately beaten by Zerweck. Carter and Matt ran 2:00.57 and 2:01.30, respectively. In third place for the Bucks was junior Ryan McIlhinney, with a PR or 2:02.47! Ryan has surely been performing well as of late, which must have a correlation with off-track social activities... In the 3200-meter run, Brian "Flow Game On Point" Iatarola had a huge PR of 9:46.80, a time which will qualify him for districts. Declan McDonald (junior) placed second in 9:59.79, outkicking HH's Matthew Allen. *Reminder: these times are all FAT (fully-automatic timing system), courtesy of Mahoney Timing. Great job boys, and good luck to those participating at the Penn Relays this weekend!
Jumps Recap--by Joe Manetta
The jumpers scored 20 out of the 36 possible points in the meet against Hatboro. These points did not come easily as the Bucks battled a mighty pole vaulter and two respectable long jumpers. In the long jump, Noah Griffin placed second with a jump of 19’2”. Afterwards in the triple jump, Griffin joined junior Erik Metz to place in the top two places in the triple jump. Metz won with a bound of 41’3”, while Griffin placed second with a jump of 38’10”. Meanwhile, the vertical jumpers were rising to the occasion. The vaulters placed second and third to the Hatters. Douple led the Bucks’ advance with a vault of 12’6” to get him second, while Pat Danas placed third with a jump of 11’ even. Brian Iatarola won the high jump with a jump of 5’8”, despite the breezy weather. The most notable PR of the day belonged to first time jumper Brody Johnson, leaping 17' 2'' in his first attempt of the season. Now the only hurdle left for the jumpers in the duel meet season is the East dual meet at Tohickon Middle School on Tuesday where the jumpers hope to advance their PR’s to prevail over strong jumpers at East.

Central Bucks West Relays: 25 years of Excellence
April 18, 2015--- Doylestown
Central Bucks West celebrated their 25th annual relays on Saturday. The weather cooperated with sun and a near-cloudless sky; the runners cooperated with several record breaking performances. The meet kicked off with the 4x1600m relay, where the Bucks shattered the school record by 12 seconds, finishing second overall to Pennsbury. Rock Fortna gave West the lead with a blistering 4:16 opening mile. Declan McDonald (4:34) and Brian Mass (4:40) extended the lead in the middle miles, and Andrew Baker brought it home with a 4:27. The 4x200m record also went down with Josh Haschets, Ryan Walsh, Griffin Shields and Christian Bobowicz in a full second under the old record. With the season still young, four school records have gone down!

Distance recap---by Andrew Baker
The 2015 CB West Relays was a meet to remember: Great weather, great food, and even better performances! The Bucks' distance squad certainly shone bright on this sunny day, earning medal after medal, and a few PRs along the way. The first event on the track was the 4x1600 relay. This event may sound like watching paint dry, but on Saturday it proved to be quite an exhilarating race, and a great way to start off the meet! With lofty goals of breaking the school record (18:12) and attempting to defeat the behemoth Pennsbury squad, West's four standout milers hung tough in a nail-biting race. Rock Fortna (junior) led off the relay in a PR of...wait for it...4:16!!! Side note: immediately after the race, Fortna seemed to have grown longer and darker hair, and a very manly mustache, rendering him an exact replica of a one, Steve Prefontaine. Is this possible? Stay tuned. Declan McDonald (junior) was the second leg of the relay, and put CB West in first position, running a time of 4:34! Next came sophomore Brian Mass, who managed to increase an already decent lead, and ran a respectable 4:40. Finally, Professor Baker (an endearing nickname coined by Mr. Wilson) received the baton with a sizable gap over Pennsbury's Sam Webb. After holding off Webb for the majority of the race, Baker was ultimately passed by the Pennsbury stud with 200 meters to go, and the Bucks unfortunately settled for second place. Baker, however, still tied his PR of 4:27, and the relay broke the school record by 14 seconds!! In the 4x800 relay, the CB West crew of Carter Zerweck (junior), Matt Bowen (senior), and the Baker brothers held their own in the highly-contested race. Zerweck led off in 2:00, solidifying his spot (one would imagine) on the 4x800 team headed to Penn Relays. Bowen, or should I say “Flowen,” had a great leg, running around 2:02 (which isn't Slowen), only to hand off to freshman superstar Brian Baker. Little Baker ran a PR of 2:02-point-something and handed off to Big Baker who also ran a 2:02-point-something, an experience that Mama Baker will never forget. The crew placed 3rd overall behind Pennsbury and Penn Wood. The Bucks' distance medley relay (1200-400-800-1600)also posted some good performances. Ben Smullen (sophomore) ran the infamous 1200-meter leg in 3:30, handing off to Zerweck on the 400 (52.2 seconds), then came Ryan McIlhinney on the 800 leg (2:06), and finally Brian Iatarola on the 1600 (4:40). West's DMR placed 4th overall.
Jumps Recap---by Joe Manetta
As the weather warms up, the CB West Jumpers achieve hotter and hotter performances. In what is arguably the best year for jumps in a very long time, the Bucks are beginning to really show their stripes. Before the start of the meet the long jumpers converged on the official to listen to the order and get ramped up for their coming jumps. Erik Metz came up with an impressive near half a foot PR of 19’4.25” --just a quarter inch behind his arch-nemesis/jumping buddy Noah Griffin-- placing Metz third in his field. Griffin and Metz teamed up to place fourth in the long jump over all, leaping over the competition. In the triple jump, Griffin and Metz teamed once again to earn second overall. In the triple, Metz hopped, skipped, and jumped his way to a leap of 41’2.5”, and Griffin followed along with three bounds totaling 39’.75”. In the vertical jumps, the bucks continued their medaling streak by placing fourth in high jump and fifth in the pole vault. In the high jump, the reliable 5’8” jumper, Brian Iatarola, teamed up with his non-distance running high jump partner, Adam Davis, to place fourth with 11’ overall. In the assisted high jump, aka pole vault, Jason Douple (13’) and Pat Danas (11’), came together to place fifth overall. Needless to say, the jumpers’ success is partly owed to the wonderful sandpit art done by Brian Miller, and fantastic photographer (and up-coming long jumper) Brody Johnson. Good job Bucks, the rest of this year ought to be most enjoyable if you keep up the hard work.

Brian Miller ruled in the sand, tossing the shot and discus to first place finishes. Brian Iatarola distinguished himself by placing first in the high jump and second in the 3200m run, two events not normally considered complimentary. The Bucks head into this weekend's Central Bucks West Relays with a full head of steam.

Sprints Recap --- by Evan Henrich
The hot heat of the 100m was without a doubt the fastest and most exciting of the season! Sophomore Christian Bobowicz, in his first 100m of 2015, shattered the 11 second barrier with a PR of 10.9. His time surpasses the District One Championship qualifying standard of 11.0. He defeated Souderton senior Chad Ziegler, who scored in all four events that he competed in against the Bucks, by two tenths of a second. Footsteps behind Bobowicz was reliable teammate senior Josh Haschets, with an equally impressive PR (3rd PR this season) of 11.3 to grab third. Four more Bucks sprinters ran sub 12 in the 100m. Among them include junior Ryan Walsh (11.4), sophomore Griffin Shields (11.5), senior Evan Henrich (11.7), and up-and-coming freshman Chris Arzberger (11.9). Freshman Jack McCausland, also worthy of recognition, ran a speedy 12.1 just minutes after the 300m hurdles. In the 200m, Bobowicz and Haschets returned to go 1-3. In the 400m, freshman standout Jake Claricurzio ran an impressive PR of 51.9 to win the race by over a second! Senior Joe Brill hung on for second place. The Bucks' 4x100 also neared the district qualifying mark although they were narrowly surpassed by an outstanding Souderton quartet.
As the 4x400 relay approached, the tension at War Memorial field reached record highs as everyone realized this race would potentially decide the meet. Claricurzio led off the race with a nice lead and the spectators went wild, but the hand-off to senior Joe Brill did not go as planned, resulting in the baton clattering onto the track as Souderton zipped by. Brill remained unfazed, picked up the baton with ultra-quick reflexes and made up the gap quickly. Senior Andrew Baker and junior Rock Fortna then ran 53.1 and 51.4, respectively, to convincingly win the race. Congrats to the 4-0 Bucks!
Throws Recap --- by Erik Metz Jr.
The throwers ground out the meet versus Souderton, scoring 11 out of 27 points, making it the first time the throwers haven’t scored more than half of available points. In the shot put, seniors Brian Miller and Adam Anastasiadis scored first and second respectively, followed up by junior Jacob Schiela’s huge personal best of 45’ 1.5”. Anastasiadis returned in the discus to throw 105’ 8” for a third place finish. In the javelin, junior Kyle Johnson took on huge throws from Souderton and came out with a third place finish, scoring the final point of the meet, the deciding factor in winning the closest meet so far this season.
Distance and Hurdles Recap --- By Andrew Baker the first

Next was the 4x8 relay, and an outstanding lead-off leg by senior Matt Bowen (2:03) put West in the lead, followed by 2nd and 3rd legs Alec Hofer (2:08) and Teagan Fortna (2:10), and anchor, junior Ryan McIlhinney (2:10). Council Rock Kiwanis Invitational:Bucks Place Third in Field of Twenty Three
April 4, 2015---Newtown
With wind gusts over 30mph for most of the day, no one expected personal bests. Nonetheless, several were posted Saturday at the 28th annual Council Rock Invitational. Leading the Bucks were individual performances by ironman Rock Fortna and Sophomore Brian Mass. Fortna won the 800m in 1:57.9. It was Pennsylvania's second best time this year. In the 5000m Sophomore Brian Mass captured first place with a time of 16:11. The sprint medley set a school record which will undoubtedly be eclipsed soon: A scintillating second place to Pennridge, despite an acrobatic, juggling handoff on a 100 leg.
Sprint Recap---- by Evan Henrich
At the 28th Annual Council Rock Kiwanis Invitational this Saturday, the Buck's most notable performance in the sprints included the 1-1-2-4 SMR team of Josh Haschets (senior), Carter Zerweck (junior), Christian Bobowicz (sophomore), and Jake Claricurzio (freshman). Representative of all high school classes, they went on to break the previous school record set in 2009 by a quarter second with 3:39.00! Despite an intense headwind on the backstretch resulting in a rough handoff and loss of time, Haschets, with superhuman ability, heroically dove to place the baton in Zerweck's hand - millimeters from disqualification. Zerweck then rushed the baton to Bobowicz waiting at the 200m mark, where Bobowicz made up some serious ground with a 22.2 split. To finish off the race, Claricurzio, in his 400, picked one off on the homestretch to get CB West 2nd place and a whopping 14 points. Also, In the open 100m, sophomore Griffin Shields had a breakthrough race, qualifying for the finals with a PR of 11.70 (FAT). In the finals, he went on to slightly improve his time with 11.66. Well done Bucks.

West Defeats Pennridge! Bucks Overcome Wet Weather, Sharp Elbows to Remain Unbeaten!
3/31/2015----Perkasie
With rain threatening, it wasn't clear at first that the meet would even be held. But meet officials worked at double tempo to move the events along before the rain came. Central Bucks took advantage of the opportunity to hand Pennridge their first defeat of the season, the Bucks' first win over the Rams since 2011. On the track, West left many obtainable points behind, but the effort in the field events carried the day. Perhaps the most dramatic event occurred in the final straightaway of the 4x400 relay, where Sophomore Christian Bobowicz, closing in for the kill, was elbowed into the outer lanes. Pennridge was disqualified as the Ram coaches looked on in disbelief.
Sprint Recap....by Evan Henrich
In the third dual meet of the season versus Pennridge, CB West ran well and got points in all of the individual sprint events and the 4x400 relay as well. In the 100m, senior Josh Haschets took third, placing for the 2nd time in a row in this event. In the 200m, sophomore Christian Bobowicz ran a lightning-fast PR of 22.6 to win the race and improve his previous PR of 22.9 set just last week. Bobowicz's 22.6 qualifies him for districts in May. In the 400m, Freshman standout Jake Claricurzio, in his first ever 400m for the Bucks, ran a VERY impressive time of 52.2 to take second! Senior Joe Brill was right behind with 52.3 to grab third. Good job Bucks!
Hurdles and Distance Recap--- by Andrew Baker
The Bucks took down SOL powerhouse Pennridge on Friday, boasting some respectable performances in the hurdles and distance events. Starting off the meet, DhungJoo Kim (senior) continued his streak of victories in the 300 hurdles, and finished with a season PR of 41.7! Kim also won the 110 hurdles in 16.3, just shy of his PR. Sophomore Noah Griffin placed 3rd with a time of 17.2. In a toughly-contested 1600m, junior Rock Fortna duked it out with P-ridge stud Tucker Desko, with Desko (PR of 4:25) ultimately passing him on the home stretch. Fortna finished in 4:26.3 - a couple seconds short of his personal best. Sophomore Brian Mass also hung tough, finishing 3rd in 4:38.5. The Bucks also posted a strong performance in the 3200m race: junior stud Brian Iatarola, with flow like no other, won in a time 10:01.2, just barely missing his season PR. After Desko took 2nd place, Ben Smullen (sophomore) crossed the finish line in 3rd with a season best 10:07.4. Other notable performances include senior Andrew Baker's 4x8 leg of 2:00, and Matt Belding (senior) racing the 3200 with only one shoe! Good win, CB West.
Jumping Recap---by Joe Manetta
The Bucks jumpers showed up for the meet against Pennridge. On a blustery and windy day West scored twenty one out of the possible thirty six points in the jumps against the mighty Pennridge. In the long jump, Noah Griffin jumped a 2.75” PR of 19’0” to land him third. Afterwards in the triple jump, Griffin teamed up with Erik Metz to get first and second respectively in the triple jump. Both the boys achived PR’s, with Metz hopping, skipping, and jumping a huge PR of 41’3.25”, and Griffin followed right behind him with another giant PR of 40’6”! The Buck’s vaulters soared over Pennridge, completely sweeping the pole vault. Pat Danas led with a vault of 10’6”, right behind him Josh Bazzano came in at 10’ flat, and to round it out Adam Davis joined his upper-classmates with a vault of 9’6”. In the high jump Brian Iatarola came in second with a leap of 5’6”. Needless to say the jumpers and vaulters put in their fair share of work against Pennridge. After all, it is Track and Field and not just Track.
Below: DhungJoo Kim: Taking care of business in the high hurdles. Right: Tension in the air as the 3200 crew awaits the gun.

West Cruises Past Quakertown 120-30: Improves to 2-0
3/27/2015--- Doylestown
The West boys dashed past Quakertown today, setting numerous personal records along the way. They will compete against SOL juggernaut Pennridge next week.
Sprint Recap--by Evan Henrich
In the first meet of the season against CB South some might argue that the Bucks were slightly lacking in the sprints. However, with today's impressive performance against Quakertown this is no longer debatable! Collectively, the Bucks sprinters posted some very respectable times, kept Q-town's sprinting points down to a bare minimum of 7 points, and showed that they are a force to be reckoned with in future meets. Starting off, senior Josh Haschetts and sophomore Joe Manetta ran monster PR's, 11.4 and 11.5 respectively, to take 1-2 in the 100m dash. Shortly after, Haschetts and Manetta, with the help of sophomore superstar Christian Bobowicz, all achieved personal bests to sweep the 200m dash! Bobowicz comfortably took first with an eye-dropping 22.9, followed by Haschetts (23.6) and Manetta (24.0). In the 400m, reliable senior, Joe Brill took 2nd place with 52.8. All the momentum from the opening events carried well over into the sprint relays. In the 4x100, the team of Bobowicz, Manetta, senior Jason Douple, and senior Josh Bazzano took first with a respectable 45.6. The Bucks also won comfortably in the 4x400 in 3:33, with the team of Carter Zerweck , Andrew Baker , and brothers Teagan and Rock Fortna. Examples include sophomore Evan Washington's split of 55.2 in the 4x400m and freshman Jake Claricurzio's 24.3 in the 200m (following a remarkable anchor leg in the 4x800!).
It's also important to point out that many underclassmen stepped up today. Examples include sophomore Evan Washington's split of 55.2 in the 4x400m and freshman Jake Claricurzio's 24.3 in the 200m (following a remarkable anchor leg in the 4x800!). West Junior Rock Fortna jumpstarted the 2014 XC season with a 41-second PR of 15:55 to celebrate his 17th birthday that fell earlier this week and place 5th overall in the deepest field ever assembled at the 15th annual Ivyland 5k.
Birthday buddy (today!) and classmate Brian Iatarola also wasted no time, throwing down with a 4:50 first mile and hanging tough to place 6th overall in a 16:26 PR and edge his regretful coach. Rock and Brian went 1-2 in the 15-19 age group. Rock won a dutch apple pie for the family. Brian earned a pint glass which he plans to use for skim milk. Rounding out the top five to seal the 2014 team title over William Tennent and New Hope Solebury were junior Declan McDonald (16:45, PR), sophomore Brian Mass (17:00, PR), and senior Ben Severn (17:02, PR). Seniors Andrew Baker (17:12, PR) and Trevor Belding (17:21) were the Bucks' sixth and seventh men. Sophomore Teagan Fortna (17:22), junior Logan Mazullo (17:23, PR), and sophomore Alec Hofer (17:26, PR) piled in to close out the top ten. Senior Ian Davies (17:40) was close behind, just ahead of sophomore Mark McClenahan (17:43, PR). Other PRs were posted by senior Matt Belding (18:01), junior Carter Zerweck (18:05), senior Tyler Press (18:15), sophomore John Smith (20:10 - top new guy!), senior Evan Henrich (20:47), freshmen Jack McCausland (21:10) and Vlad Pishnenko (21:22), sophomores Damian Refice (21:30) and Joe Manetta (22:14), and freshman Riley Warren (23:10). Special thanks to Mary and Jon Severn for throwing a low-cost shut-down-the-town-and-have-us-a-race-and-meal wholesome community event (500+ registrants!) and to their brave parents for opening their home for 32 boys to use their only bathroom at 7:30 am. The Bucks return to action at 6:00 pm Friday on the grass hills of Pennridge High School for a friendly 5k scrimmage. |
