"The best I've ever seen Rock look" was the way Coach Mahoney described it. In a homecoming of sorts (the Mahoney brothers as well as Rock and Teagan's father ran at CRN), West put their stamp on their last September showing at the Council Rock North Invitational on Saturday.
CB West held off district three powerhouse Twin Valley (85 points) along with district one rival and host Council Rock North (124 points) to win with 65 team points. Hatboro-Horsham (Mike Mahoney's squad), who the Bucks will face on Wednesday along with Quakertown, placed 4th out of 26 teams with 188 points.
Rock Fortna (2nd, 16:10) led the Bucks with a strong kick to the finish over the last kilometer that moved him from fifth to second overall in the 170-man field. Super sophomore Brian Mass ran outstandingly as well, posting a 6th place finish in 16:32. Senior Ian Davies also went after it, getting himself into the front of the race and hanging on for a solid result (11th, 16:45). Juniors Brian Iatarola (22nd, 16:55) and Declan McDonald (24th, 17:00) also earned medals while they closed out the 51-second 1-5 spread, which was strong considering how well the Bucks' top men raced. Seniors Ben Severn (38th, 17:23) and Trevor Belding (43rd, 17:30) also finished in the top 25% of the large field.
The Bucks made a statement in the JV race, nearly earning a perfect team score with just 16 points in the 228-man field with 21 complete teams and 5 incomplete teams. Great Valley was second with 78 points and Hatboro-Horsham was third with 121 points.
Senior Beckett Wilson (1st, 17:23), sophomore Mark McClenahan (2nd, 17:30), sophomore Teagan Fortna (3rd, 17:38), senior Andrew Baker (4th, 17:39), junior Logan Mazullo (6th, 17:57), senior Matt Belding (15th, 18:28), sophomore Alec Hofer (25th, 18:46), and senior Tyler Press (26th, 18:47) turned heads by painting the front of the field with black and gold. Junior Ryan Hickey also nearly set a personal best on the challenging course (21:10, 133rd).
West also took second in the novice team race out of 17 full teams and 144 finishers. Sophomore newbies John Smith (3rd, 18:43) and Drew Schoen (10th, 19:04) led the way, with freshmen Jack McCausland (17th, 19:25, PR) and Michael Samson (18th, 19:25, PR) close behind. Sophomore newbie Joe Manetta closed out the scoring for the Bucks with his 52nd place finish in 21:07. West had 94 team points, just behind Wissahickon (76 points). Downingtown East took third with 132 points. Freshman Vladimir Pishnenko (55th, 21:15) and senior newbie Evan Henrich (64th, 21:36) were West's 6th and 7th men.
West (4-0) returns to action against Quakertown (1-3) and Hatboro-Horsham (2-1) at Hatboro-Horsham on Wednesday afternoon.
